Now that the dust has settled a little bit on the UFC’s début on network television I thought I would do like everyone else and wade in with what I thought of the show. The production was slick and well put together. The whole thing was very well organised and professional and this is obviously the kind of image that needs to be cultivated if the UFC is truly going to break into the mainstream. The fight was exciting but a bit short (which isn’t something you can complain about, this is MMA after all.) So all in all a perfect night. Well almost. The only fly in the ointment came in the form of a large baldy headed Bostonian; the UFC president Dana White.

Good Night Irene!!

November 14, 2011 in Feature, K-1, Video By

All of a sudden you get a smack flush to the side of your head, your skull rotates violently and your brain’s inertia causes it to smash into the base of your skull.  You lose all control of your limbs and fall flat to the ground looking like a Stretch Armstrong that just got pulled from the microwave.  You wake up and all around you are bright lights but you remember nothing, you don’t know how you got there.  Were you in a fight? did you get knocked over by a car? you really can’t remember.

Suddenly it all becomes clear, your eyesight gets less blurry, your memory fades back, and all of a sudden you’re overcome by the most overwhelming sense of disappointment.  If only you’d been more careful, if only you’d stuck to your plan, if only you’d walked around the bloody lamppost.

Everybody loves a knockout, a definitive, no backsies end to a fight.  No questions, no debate, just one man with his hands raised and another in a rubbery heap on the floor nearby.  If you love knockouts as much as we do here at WackWack then we have a treat for you below.  StillWill is back with another cracking highlight video, so do yourself a favour and check out some of the best knockouts you’re ever likely to see.

UFC on FOX: What a shiny octagon you have grandma

November 13, 2011 in UFC, UFC on FOX By

Well now, UFC on FOX is over, we have a new heavyweight champion, we witnessed quite possibly the fight of the year and Dana White just informed us that 30% of all people in Brazil just watched JDS pummel Cain Velasquez (that’s going to be one hell of a homecoming barbeque).  But you don’t want to know about all that., besides, I’m sure one of my esteemed colleagues will have a full rundown in the morning *wink wink nudge nudge*.

You just can’t stop thinking about it though, you can’t get it off your mind. You just can’t figure out how, after such a long night of awesome fights the octagon stayed so lovely and shiny for its debut on national television.  Well worry no more, Esther Lin of MMAFighting caught the whole sordid affair on camera.  During the break between the facebook prelims and the FOX main card several UFC staffers painted (yes that’s right, painted, not cleaned) the floor of the octagon to mask the blood from the earlier fights.

I’ve lost count of how many fight cards I’ve seen over the years, but this is a first for me.

PRIDE NEVER DIE!

November 12, 2011 in PRIDE By

On the 11th of October 1997, a Japanese pro wrestler fought a Brazilian. This might not sound all that interesting to most of you, but if I told you that Brazilian’s name was Rickson Gracie you might start remembering what this means. Well, to me, it means that this was the start of something beautiful in MMA. That’s right, this fight was the headliner on the very 1st Pride card.

The best fight you won’t see on Fox this weekend

November 11, 2011 in Feature, UFC By

On November 12th 2011 the UFC is set to make its debut on the Fox Network. The MMA world has been feverishly debating who will walk away with the UFC Heavyweight championship as Cain Velasquez and Junior Dos Santos battle it out in the main event. It stands to be an awesome fight; a technical slugfest and a battle worthy of all the hype and promotion that has been going on over the past few weeks.

However, the co-main event on this card features two of the lightweight divisions most exciting athletes. Ben Henderson vs Clay Guida promises to be a fast-paced, balls-to-the-wall slobberknocker, and in my opinion potentially one of the fights of the year. For added incentive, Dana White has confirmed that the winner gets a shot at Frankie Edgar for the UFC Lightweight belt.

Them’s the Breaks

(Or Lee Kerlin is wrong, and this is why)

Hang on just a minute there, me old cobber: are you seriously suggesting a complete overhaul of the weight class system in MMA? It may have been a comment intended to start a lively row in a bar, but if you’re posing such a proposition as a serious one, then I’ll answer it in equally serious and systematic terms.

Cut the Weight Cut

November 9, 2011 in Feature, Weight Cuts By

This past weekend while in Birmingham to attend UFC 138, and while more than a little inebriated I casually revealed an idea that had been rattling around my head for a while and much to my surprise it was about as welcome as a Priest in a playschool. This idea had surfaced because once again, at the weigh ins for UFC 138, Thiago Alves failed to make weight. However I wasn’t suggesting some kind of punishment for people who fail to make weight or some radical shake up of the weight divisions. What I suggested was the complete abolition of weight cutting in the world of MMA. I know I’m a lunatic but hear me out.

Sorry we’ve been away for so long everyone, but we’re back and updates will be coming faster than ever. Stay tuned over the next few weeks for some big news!

I know you absolutely can’t wait a single second longer so just to tide you over for the next day or two, here’s a rundown of WackWack’s top 5 taches in MMA, it is Movember after all.

(If you have a few spare pennies why not donate to Movember and help fight prostate cancer)

5: Antonio Banuelos

Bringing up the rear of the pack we have tiny man Antonio Banuelos.  Antonio more than makes up for his tiny stature with this rather fantastic handlebar number. Man points +3.

Doing It For the Little Guy

October 11, 2011 in Feature, Uncategorized By

On Sunday morning in Houston, Texas Frankie Edgar once again proved what I’ve always said, never underestimate the power of the small man complex. At UFC 136 despite being the champion Edgar entered the octagon as the under dog and to be honest that fact isn’t really all that surprising. His opponent, Gray Maynard was the bigger and stronger fighter, had won their first meeting and had almost finished Edgar in their now infamous UFC 125 clash. Faced with this everyone felt that unless something went horribly wrong Maynard would have the clear advantage. Edgar though had other ideas.

Why is winning not good enough?

May 2, 2011 in Canada, GSP, UFC By

Photo from Headkicklegend.com

Yet again at UFC 129 the world witnessed George St. Pierre putting in a fantastic performance to defend the welterweight title against a more than capable opponent in the form of Jake Shields and yet again the world seems to be more concerned with the fact that he didn’t finish the fight. Now maybe I’ve missed something but last time I checked the aim of a fighter is to win and GSP did just that.

As a UFC champion, every time GSP steps into the cage he is taking on the cream of the mixed martial arts community.  This inevitably means that despite his obvious skill, he is going to be facing fighters that are at the top of their game and so are by their very nature difficult to finish.  Lets just look back at his last four opponents, all opponents that GSP completely dominated, to prove this point.
